A Time of Reflection

We are now in the liturgical season of Lent.  Traditionally it is a time to reflect upon our faith journey, or as my Scottish professor might say a time to consider, “how are you and Jesus getting on?”  So, here’s a few ways to refresh and renew your relationship with Jesus.
Prayer is a wonderful way to get close to God and feel God close to you.  I recommend to you several materials that might be assistance:  A Guide to Prayer for Ministers and Other Servants (from Upper Room), the little Upper Room booklet that you can find on the table in the lobby, and almost any book by Ben Johnson.
Another way to move along on your faith journey is to listen to or read the Bible.  We have a coy of the entire bible in the NKJ version on CD that can be checked out.  Of course, if you have not already become part of the Jesus of Nazareth  video class, jump right in.  Also, if you want to do a little bible study at home, I can recommend the older version of the William Barclay brief commentaries on the New Testament, Daily Study Bible.  Many generations have found his wisdom engaging and helpful.  His little books can be found on Amazon.com under used books, so they are quite affordable.

However you move closer to God, whether in prayer, bible study or good works don’t do it alone.  Jesus called disciples to follow him.  They, in turn, worked together and went out to create new groups and communities.  We were made to work together in community.  There’s something about having to be somewhere at an appointed time to meet with others that keeps us committed and engaged.  It’s really hard to be a Lone Ranger Christian, so find a small group in the church or your neighborhood or start your own.  You’ll be glad you did.
Whatever you do to strengthen your relationship with Jesus Christ will pay you back many times over compared to your investment in it.  Those of you already in bible study, prayer or mission groups already know that; just don’t forget to tell people about it.  And those who are ready to begin, jump right in, the water’s fine.
See you on Sunday,

Caroline
